The Dangers of At Home Teeth Whitening Products

There are so many dodgy teeth whitening products that it can often be confusing to know what is safe and what is effective.

A consumer watchdog group in the UK discovered teeth whitening products available on major websites such as eBay, Amazon and Google that contain dangerously high levels of Hydrogen Peroxide – up to 350 times what is permitted in the European Union!

The European Union, which has some of the most stringent cosmetic compliance regulations in the world banned sales of teeth whitening products with over 0.1% Hydrogen Peroxide. By contrast, the teeth bleaching products that have the ADA (American Dental Association) Seal of Acceptance contain 10 percent Carbamide Peroxide (a bleaching agent that is roughly three times weaker than hydrogen peroxide).

One brand on Amazon described their product saying “there is no stronger or more effective gel available on the market,”. It contained 44% Hydrogen Peroxide, wowsers!

When such strong concentrations are used at home and not under the supervision of a dentist it can lead to permanent damage to the enamel, increased tooth sensitivity and make them even more susceptible to staining in the long term!

When looking at a Peroxide based teeth whitening product be sure to check what percentage the concentration is, or if in doubt speak with your dentist. You can also opt for products like the Keeko Botanical Teeth Whitening Pen that uses clinically proven ingredients like Bicarb Soda which is effective on stains but won’t compromise your health.
